CropLife America Supports Growing Climate Solutions Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week’s reintroduction of the Growing Climate Solutions Act, authored by Senators Stabenow (D-MI) and Braun (R-IN), will create clarity for farmers seeking to tap into new carbon market incentives for climate-smart agriculture. The Senate Agriculture Committee is expected to take up the bill soon. “Addressing the impacts of climate change is vital to U.S. agriculture and our ability to maintain a healthy food supply,” said Chris Novak, CLA president and CEO. “CropLife America (CLA) recognizes that farmers have, and will continue to play, a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Growing Climate Solutions Act offers meaningful progress toward enabling farmer and landowner participation in voluntary carbon markets. While farmers have been engaged in conservation practices for years, the expansion of voluntary carbon markets will provide further incentive to expand these efforts.”
“Regenerative farming practices such as no-till farming, conservation-tillage, and the use of cover crops are made possible through the use of pesticides. The responsible use of pesticides within these systems helps protect the environment and improves the sustainability of our food supply. Through the use of pesticides and other crop protection technologies, farmers can produce more food using fewer resources, while conserving water, reducing soil erosion and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
“As a member of the Food and Agriculture Climate Alliance and an integral part of the food system, CLA stands ready to work with members of Congress and other stakeholders to ensure passage of the Growing Climate Solutions Act as a first step in addressing the long-term challenges of climate change.”
